Strict matchmaking is a setting that allows solo players to only queue into games against other solo players when play in ranked playlists. Players often choose to enable this kind of matchmaking to avoid loading into games with parties. In the game, parties receive bonus MMR to compensate for the coordination they receive from working together, with all skill and experience values aggregated together. This leads to many players wanting to just play with other solo-queued grinders, due to partied players sometimes having a different level of motivation to their solo teammates. Valve believe this choice-based separation of players entering into games alone or partied up has seen a spike in matchmaking times, as well as a reduction in the overall balance of skill in games, and are testing to see if the two are linked. I will still test it out, but I’m afraid solo queue might just be dead for me and a lot of others going forward. One group that will enjoy the change, however, is regular partied players. If matchmaking queues do rise, not many will complain about quicker queue times for the foreseeable future. Dota 2. Players aren’t happy with the lack of solo queue in Valorant
Play class-based games and you’ll know that it’s tough to convince people to play certain roles — there are only so many people who’d rather be the support character than the front line hero. Valve’s solution for Dota 2? Give players an incentive to fill those roles. Its latest update to the game adds a Fast Queue option that bumps Ranked players to the front of the line when they’re willing to play with all roles selected.
The intricacies of Dota 2’s matchmaking rating and ranking system can be To do this, the system considers five separate MMR values, with some of these by the solo queue mode in the game client, which disallows stacking up with friends.
MMR starts at a value of 1 point, and theoretically has no ceiling at all—which means that MMR can grow infinitely. A player can obtain his or her MMR by participating in ranked matchmaking, which is divided into six-month seasons. Fresh accounts and those that have gone through seasonal MMR resets must participate in calibration matches, in order to have themselves placed at a certain MMR value. Once a player completes their calibration matches, they receive a ranking medal, which is roughly based on their MMR.

That said, there is information about the intricate details made available by data miners and such, which we will cover in this general guide to the system. Naturally, the matchmaking system tries its best to group ten players of similar MMRs together, in order to get the fairest and most balanced matchup possible.
Players call for adjustments to new match-making system
No more! And solo players will now only ever go against teams who have, at most, one party of two. Glory be! They explained:. We are unsure if an absolute requirement like this will result in net higher quality matchmaking due to the more limited opponent spectrum available in that case, but we know this is an aspect the community talks about often and we are going to do our best to work within those constraints.
Similarly, any solo player will now only ever be considered for matches against at most one party of two.
Valve is planning on doing some matchmaking testing. Dota 2 devs explain why they’ll be turning off strict solo queues. Published: 5/Sep/ Updated: I use strict solo queue because in most case when I’m solo q and are playing with other stacks they are not using in-game mics to communicate like at all.
The players already have a level playing ground because either side can get matched with and against teams – and when one side has a team, the other side has a similar team. This would of course also increase solo queue times, again leading to even more forum whining. But you know what? This is actually entirely false – the developers have repeatedly stated that the game is intended to be experienced with grouped teams.
Overwatch could do what Dota 2 does and allow solo players to choose to queue for exclusively solo matches, or to queue for either or. People can choose whether they want a longer wait for matchmaking or the possibility of playing with groups. Unfortunately people who play competitive multiplayer games are often jerks, so that option should really just be taken away by the developers. Solo only queue for comp Competitive Discussion.
Wait what? Do you mean an area that only solo queue players only face other solo queue players? Or just make competitive solo queueing as the only option. If the former, I have no issue, if the latter, you can go screw right off. Maybe you should make your own game with your own rules?

Valve also said that all the changes they are working on will be ready next week. The main problems of the new matchmaking system include half-stacked players playing against full-stacked teams, which often leads to very one-sided matches. Valve adjustments will most likely be focused on the reporting system, as it has been the focus of recent updates and still needs some work to do.
We are working on a few fixes to improve matchmaking quality and expect to have it out later this coming week. Along with players becoming bantered due to their behavior and problems with long wait times for high MMR players, there is also a very serious problem with players who can report who they want without any consequences.

Matchmaking is perhaps the most important component of Dota 2. Because it is a competitive team-based game, how you get ranked and teamed with other people is crucial. Your entire experience depends upon these things and Valve has decided to finally give the matchmaking system the attention it deserves. If you wanted to play solo-queue, you were viewed through the filter of your solo MMR, which meant this: whenever you tried to search for a game, your opponents and teammates were determined using the same criteria and thus, you were basically asked to play alongside and against people of similar solo MMR.
The main problem with this system had to do with the fact that Dota 2 is a highly sophisticated game. And if your level of skill in the midlane was worth 5, MMR but your level of skill as a position four support was only worth 2, MMR, as a 4, — 5, MMR competitor you would actually be in the wrong bracket for that match, and most likely ruin it for your team. Because what exactly are you going to do as a 2, MMR support in the Ancient division?
Probably feed a lot, mess up the lane equilibrium, buy the wrong items, place wards in misguided ways, forget about half of your duties as a support and so on.

Parties of 5 will always enter the Fast Queue for free, but do not earn in enough role diversity for the matchmaking population to be healthy.
We know that queue times have increased across the board recently, and the most significant factor contributing to this has been the stricter requirements that Ranked Roles imposes on the formation of matches. Prior to the introduction of Ranked Roles, the matchmaker had a wider pool of people to draw upon because of the few restrictions. In the past, when one or more players desired the same role, this conflict was resolved during the game itself, often with unpleasant results.
This conflict is now resolved at queue time, but a price of this is that the matchmaker is often starved for players in the least-queued roles. The matchmaker must wait for players in the desired roles to enter the queue, or form sub-optimal matches with the players currently in queue to satisfy all role requirements. Usually the role most in demand by the matchmaker is Hard Support, but this is not always the case, and historically this has varied based on time of day, skill bracket, region, etc.
Players in the Fast Queue are given priority by the matchmaker, and will find matches much more quickly. In order to earn games for Fast Queue, you must elect to play with all roles selected. Playing with all roles selected will also automatically place you in Fast Queue for free. When playing solo with all roles selected, you will earn four more games for future use in the Fast Queue. When grouped as a party, players can also earn Fast Queue games if the party fulfills all roles between its players.

Dota 2 has a smurf problem. Says Valve:. Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking. In theory, this should help partially eliminate some of the smurfing that goes on, levelling the playing field for newcomers.

After playing over games, my and my friends experience is: You can be matched with and against any formation of players. But when playing with a Party of 5 against 5 Individual Players, these Individuals may be of a higher skill rating then you, to compensate your improved communication. This is a common practice in Matchmaking Algorithms and all data seems to support Dota 2 works the same way.
We got in a match with a team of 5 people and our team are people who don’t know each other, so most likely, matchmaking is like filling slots for players. You will be matched with 5 players whom may or may not be “premade” that is, people who know each other who game together, like you and your 4 friends. The matchmaking system does not yet take into account premade players in any way.
The New Dota 2 Matchmaking System
The first big and quite surprising change was that Valve got rid of Solo queue in its original form. That said, Dota is a team game, so pushing players towards playing in pre-made parties to fully enjoy the game makes a lot of sense. This might currently be a problem because the new matchmaking update makes Solo a bit less enjoyable especially on the higher MMR brackets while finding a dedicated same-skill-level party is hard.
Maybe the next logical step would be to integrate a friend-finder in the client finding people close to your skill level, play-time preference, role preference, language, etc. So, to make the overall experience better for everyone it makes sense to incentivize players to behave more heavily.

With the new ranked season ongoing, this is great news for those who have noted several aspects of the current matchmaking system that have caused issues. Valve also stated that whatever changes are in the works will be ready later this week. We are working on a few fixes to improve matchmaking quality and expect to have it out later this coming week.
The main issues of the current matchmaking system included half stacked players constantly being forced to play against five stacked teams, which would lead to one-sided matches. Along with the players getting banned for poor behavior scores and some issues with high MMR players having extremely long queue times, there is a rampant issue with players being able to report anyone with no consequence.
Even if you play well in a match and end up losing by a small margin, players on your team who think you played poorly can freely report you without a reason. This has essentially turned Dota into a win to commend system where losses result in teams mass reporting each other if they are playing with randoms. This likely means a new addition to the system is coming that will weigh the reports differently based on the situation. It might even end up harming the behavior scores of those players who mass report others for reasons that the system deems unnecessary.
Why are 5-stack player card farmers even allowed in compendium matchmaking?
How do the MMR system and the ranks work in Dota 2? There are no official statements from Valve nowadays, so I made the work and researched a lot to write this long guide. There might be still mistakes or things that change over time — I will keep the post updated, comment below if something needs to be corrected! This guide is for Dota 2 beginners. For a long time, Dota 2 only had the MMR value, but brought in the ranks to give the players a stronger reference, self-fulfillment and of course a bigger reason to climb higher on the ladder!
Your MMR will have a huge impact on to your game quality: The goal is to find the suitable skill rank you really have, so that Dota 2 can match you with equal skilled players into a maximum balanced game.
With the exception of bot games, matchmaking is mostly determined by Dota Plus weighting as well – I’ve heard stories of 5-stacks that will deliberately select.
